About Israel Expo OC 2013

Israel Expo is Orange County's largest community-wide celebration of Israel, annually drawing more than 10,000 people of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds from throughout Southern California.

Israel Expo is an exciting opportunity to explore and experience Israel's unique culture, history, values, achievements and contributions to global society.

This year, Israel Expo celebrates Israel's 65th birthday with an afternoon of live entertainment, great food, fine art, dancing, shopping, children's activities and rides, exhibits and much more. Fun for all ages!

Revital Company of Israel

Revital Company will perform their upcoming musical "Hope (Hatikvah)". Fourteen young Israeli performers will take you on a journey of hope, longing and laughter through dance, song, spoken word, multi-media staging and dazzling costumes. Sneak Preview

The Jewish Unity Parade

The Jewish Unity Parade will take place at 3:50pm (gathering at 3:20pm at the TVT gym).

March with hundreds of children in celebration of Lag B'Omer and Jewish unity. You can march with your congregation, school or as an individual. Parents are welcome to join the parade with their children!

Every child will get a free parade t-shirt and a chance to win an iPod touch!

The Fishman Family All-Community Children's Choir

Children's Choirs from congregations throughout Orange County lift their voices in song at the Expo.

IDF Musical Ensemble

The IDF musical ensembles are composed of highly talented, dedicated singers and musicians, blessed with great skill, charisma, and stage presence. They perform in locations where IDF forces are stationed, from the Northern Border of Israel to the South, whether it is on a base or in the field, or at a big event. Additionally, the ensembles put on shows on a voluntary basis for civilian populations. Sneak Preview

Israeli Dancing with Yoni Carr

Yoni has performed on Broadway and toured around the world as a soloist with the Inbal Theater and Karmon Group. Yoni has over 20 years of experience in teaching and performing Israeli dance.

Maccabi Pep Rally

Maccabi mascot Judah Macca-bee will lead a pep rally in support of over 300 local OC Jewish teens and coaches who will represent our community at the JCC Maccabi Games/Artsfest this summer.

Locos

Locos is an Orange County band featuring Bob Weinberg, Steve Kaufman and Trevor Gordon. Locos perform original world music with rich harmonies sung in four languages. Their styles range from classic and folk rock and blues, to progressive and Latin jazz. Their lyrics have Jewish and social themes, exploring our relationships with God and each other in His world. Los Locos performs at charitable events and simchas in Southern California.

JStage: Willy Wonka and Medley Madness

JStage, the JCC's youth theater group for ages 10 and up, will present a 10 minute version of the show "Medley Madness"- A fast paced and entertaining presentation of Broadway music and choreography!

Yuval Haklai

"From Israel with love"

Yuval has been performing for 4 years in comedy clubs all over the world, and wrote for some of the most popular TV shows in Israel.

His recent material deals with his experiences and observations as a young Israeli coming to America, mingling with the Jewish community and learning American behavior and customs.

When and where is Israel Expo?

Israel Expo will take place on Sunday, April 28th, 1-6pm at the Samueli Jewish Campus, Federation Way, Irvine CA.

Is there Free parking?

YES! Free and VIP parking available at the following locations:

JCC Parking Lot – Free for JCC members and Expo volunteers
TVT Parking Lot (at Bonita Canyon) – Free for Disabled parking only
Vista Verde / Las Lomas Parking Lot – Free for Public
Mariners Church – Free for Public only after 1:00 pm!
TVT Parking Lot (Federation Way) - VIP parking - $10
Free and frequent shuttle services to and from the Expo grounds.

Is there FREE entrance?

YES! Thanks to our sponsors, there is no entrance fee.

Are pets allowed at the Expo?

Due to health and safety reasons, no pets are allowed at Expo, except for service animals.

Will there be food available for purchase?

Yes. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the ticket booths throughout the day and can be used to purchase food and drinks from our vendors.

How much will the rides costs?

Prices range from $1-$8, Ride-All-Day wristbands will be available for - $25. Tickets for the rides can be purchased at any of the ticket booths.

From Los Angeles or Long Beach

Route 1: South on the 405 ( San Diego Freeway) to the 73 South. Exit on MacArthur Blvd. Turn left on Bonita Canyon. Turn right on Turtle Ridge. Turn left on Federation Way.

Route 2: South on the 405 ( San Diego Freeway) to Culver Blvd. Turn right and continue on Culver (which becomes Bonita Canyon) to Turtle Ridge. Turn left on Turtle Ridge. Turn left on Federation Way.

From Riverside or North Orange County

91 to the 55 South (towards Newport Beach) to the 73 South toll road. Exit on MacArthur. Turn left on Bonita Canyon. Turn right on Turtle Ridge. Turn left on Federation Way.

From San Diego

Route 1 (Toll Road + Scenic Ride): Take the 805 North, which becomes the 5 North. Merge onto CA-73 North to the Newport Coast Drive exit. Turn right onto Newport Coast Drive, then right onto Turtle Ridge and right onto Federation Way.

Volunteering at Israel Expo is a wonderful way to celebrate community spirit and have fun!

Please sign up to volunteer at Israel Expo and help us make it run smoothly. Students can receive Community Service hours. Every shift is two hours long and you are welcome to stay more than one shift.

We look forward to enjoying this special day with you – a day for our community to come together in the spirit of friendship and celebration.

Thousands of SoCal residents come out each year for one of OC's most beloved cultural extravaganzas. The 2013 Israel Expo marks the OC Jewish community's 40th public celebration of Israel.

This year's theme, "Israel – Small Country... Big Impact!" showcases Israeli technological innovations that are changing the world and solving global problems.

Israel Expo is Orange County's largest celebration of Israel. Bringing together thousands of people of all faiths from across Southern Calif., this family-friendly event features live music and dance performances, educational exhibits and films, games, rides, food and vendors showcasing Israel's rich culture.

The Rose Project of JFFS is proud to present SpaceIL, Israel's entrant in the international Google Lunar X-Prize competition, a global race to land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon.

Inspired by a dream to make Israel the third country to get to the moon, engineers Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Weintraub established Space IL as a non-profit organization with a national mission to advance Israel's scientific and technological fields and push them to new frontiers. More than 200 volunteers along with Israeli Aerospace industries, academia and business associations have come together to make this national dream a reality. IsraeLeader will recognize individuals in Orange County who have spearheaded outstanding community Israel projects or programming that has enhanced our community's connection to Israel. Learn More

2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the Orange County Jewish community's celebration of Israel. To commemorate this exciting milestone in our community's history, Jewish Federation & Family Services is launching the first annual IsraeLeader award program.

IsraeLeader will recognize individuals in Orange County who have spearheaded outstanding community Israel projects or programming that has enhanced our community's connection to Israel.

In so doing, JFFS strives to recognize the accomplishments of these outstanding community members and their achievements in deepening our knowledge of, and relationship to, Israel and to inspire the next generation to take an active role in promoting Israel education and experiences.

Nominees are people whose initiatives have increased understanding of Israel through cultural, educational, spiritual or social experiences; promoted Israel advocacy or pro-Israel leadership development; or encouraged deeper engagement with Israel.

Winners will be chosen by our community members through an online voting process (one vote per person). All nominees will be honored at a special ceremony at the 2013 Israel Expo, Orange County's largest community celebration of Israel. The top two vote-getters will win for their organization JFFS grants in the amount of $3,600 (first place) and $1,800 (second place) to be used for Israel programming in that organization.

IsraeLeader nominees have been nominated by their organization for championing an Israel related program or project. Descriptions were provided by representatives from the nominating organizations. Voters can vote for more than one nominee but only once per nominee.

Anteaters for Israel: Naomi Warfield, nominated by Hillel Foundation of Orange Country Program: iFest. The annual, week-long Israel festival at UCI, iFest is the largest, most dynamic and recognized Israel program on the UCI campus. Now in its seventh year, iFest attracts over 5,000 attendees per year and has featured world-renowned Israeli musicians like Idan Raichel. Endorsed by the Israeli Consulate, The Rose Project, AIPAC and multiple Israel-advocacy organizations, iFest has become a model for Israel festivals on multiple college campuses.

Blair Becker, nominated by StandWithUs Blair participates in the StandWithUs internship program to promote Israel advocacy on high school campuses. StandWithUs has selected Blair to launch an original project, "Israeli All Stars," which depicts Israeli heroes on baseball-type cards. Blair drew her inspiration from Yossi Katz, an educator who created similar cards to honor Michael Levin, an American who died defending Israel. She is making this project come to life through the Jewish Club that she started in her high school.

Gordon Fishman, MD, nominated by University Synagogue Type "Israel Expo and Gordon Fishman" into Google. They are almost one and the same. Dr. Fishman has spearheaded the Expo from its inception, giving tirelessly of his time, boundless energy, and exceptional intelligence. He even provided automobiles to display. Our community's ties to Israel have strengthened through our ability to participate yearly in the Expo. Children display their art work, perform, and eat while adults listen to Israeli music, watch performers, and visit booths. Orange County residents from across the spectrum attend in growing numbers all because of Dr. Fishman's vision and leadership.

Israel Matters Committee: Kim Burger, nominated by Congregation Shir Ha-Ma'alot The Israel Matters Committee is charged with three tasks. 1. Inform the Congregation Shir Ha-Ma'a lot community about all events Israel oriented happening in Orange County; 2. Provide information/articles/commentary on issues concerning Israel; and 3. Organize and plan our annual Yom Hatzmaut celebration. The program beings with a pep rally with Hebrew school students and their parents. It is followed by an Israeli-style dinner with Israeli dancing that is followed by an adult program of lecture, presentation or class. More than 100 people attend every year.

Hal Kravitz, MD, nominated by Orange County Bureau of Jewish Education Dr. Hal Kravitz is a pioneer in the Orange County Jewish community as one of the founders of the Bureau of Jewish Education and the architect of the Bureau's TIES (Teen Israel Experience Summer) trip. He has dedicated countless hours to ensuring that teens in Orange County have the opportunity to travel to the State of Israel and deepen their connection to our homeland. Dr. Kravitz is ever the advocate for the TIES program; and he has been hands-on for over twenty years in the planning and execution of each trip. Dr. Kravitz is responsible for hundreds of teens in Orange County experiencing the summer of a lifetime in Israel.

Ken Levin, nominated by Orange County Jewish Historical Society In 1973, Ken Levin, the first executive director of Jewish Federation, created the Israel Fair in honor of Israel's 25th birthday. Held on May 6th at Cal State Fullerton, it was attended by thousands and was the first community-wide celebration of the founding of Israel. Later known as the Israel Expo, this year marks its 40th anniversary; and the Orange County Jewish community has Ken Levin to thank for being the first to organize and run this most important annual community event.

Merkzim Tzeirim: Mai Gattenyo & Adar Karny, nominated by Shevet Tapuz Merakzim Tzeirim plays a key role in instilling Israeli pride and culture in Orange County. In addition to organizing and participating in community outreach events such as Irvine Global Village, Israel Expo and the Yom Hazikaron ceremony, Merakzim Tzeirim also work on a weekly basis with 3rd-12th grade Israeli youth in Orange County, during two hour activities taught in Hebrew. As representatives of the Israeli Scouts of Orange County, they also represent Israel in advocating for Israel to the surrounding communities at their respective high schools. They each volunteer over 500 hours a year, and are dedicated to becoming future leaders in the community.

Margalit Moskowitz, nominated by Temple Beth Emet Margalit has been sharing her enthusiasm for Israel and the Hebrew language since she started teaching at Temple Beth Emet. Generations of TBE students, who are now leaders at many other synagogues, know what they know and feel what they feel toward Israel from their contact with Margalit's effusiveness and love for our national homeland. We literally cannot tell you how many congregants and former congregants have told us how their love for Hebrew and/ or Israel was either started by or enhanced by Margalit. It just comes naturally to her.

Johanna Rose, nominated by Congregation B'nai Israel Congregation B'nai Israel, Tustin, submits the name of Johanna Rose for her efforts to leverage the leadership of CBI on behalf of Israel. Johanna did so as founding executive director of AIPAC in Orange County. Initial chairs, David Rose and Blossom Siegel, were CBI members, as were three of the next four presidents. The first major AIPAC gathering in Orange County (August 2002) was hosted by CBI congregants Arnold and Ruth Feuerstein. CBI was the first synagogue in the county to send a delegation to the national policy conference and later to send high school delegations. CBI has worked on behalf of Israel with the guidance and inspiration of Johanna Rose.

Blossom Siegel, nominated by Jewish Federation & Family Services A pioneer of pro-Israel education in OC and beyond, Blossom has sat on JFFS' Connect 2 Israel Committee for over a decade, overseeing the organization's grants and projects in Israel, including bomb shelter renovation. She has been a national leader on the JFNA Israel & Overseas Committee and has co-chaired Israel Expo since 2011. In 2003, she co-founded "Israel Up Close" which produces news segments providing an objective and holistic view of Israel. The programs are broadcast on TV networks worldwide, reaching more than 500 million people and are translated into Arabic, Russian, Spanish and Mandarin. IUC has been instrumental in shaping the mindset about Israel on a global scale.

Shalom Shalev, nominated by Tarbut V'Torah Shalom is a gift to our community. First, he keeps the children of our community safe. Secondly, he is responsible for the creation and implementation of Tarbut V'Torah's three week trip to Poland and Israel, tailoring it to meet the specific needs of our students. The Juniors leave feeling connected to their Jewish roots and return from Israel newly inspired to truly learn the Hebrew language, to better understand the Middle East conflict, and committed to return to Israel to keep the Jewish flame burning. Shalom Shalev is the reason for this dramatic transformation that sparks a "fire in the students' belly" to live a Jewish life - not because their parents tell them to, but because they have grabbed ownership of their own Jewish identity and believe deeply in what it means to be Jewish.

Bernice Watkin, nominated by Temple Bat Yahm Bernice Watkin has served as Orange County Chairperson for American Israel Public Affairs Committee for the past two years. Her tireless efforts have produced unprecedented growth in membership and fundraising and have allowed AIPAC to bring outstanding programming and speakers to Orange County and to work directly with Orange County elected officials on behalf of Israel.

Yafa Segev, www.yafa-art.co.il Yafa is a textile artist who lives in the Golan Heights. Her handicraft is created with 100% quality, love and expertise. Among her creations are: drapes, table, clothes, challa covers, napkins, pillows, ribbons and runners that are all original pieces.

Shoshi Orpaz, www.orpazs.com Shoshi is an artistic Jewelry designer who lives in Givataim. After many years of working in Biochemistry as a M.SC graduated at Bar Ilan and Jerusalem University, Shoshi decided to return to her old love – art. Shoshi makes unique knitted jewelry, working with wire and cotton threads using different techniques, knitting necklaces, bracelets and earrings in a variety of designs and colors.

Batya's Beauty Jewelry, www.batyas.com As a pianist and vocalist, Batya is a jewelry designer who comes from a world of sounds. Batya's creations include earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, leg bracelets, bows, pins and belts. The materials she uses are highly diverse: leather, silicone, rye and silk ribbons, copper, gold, silver, goldfield, brass, beads, crystals and gems. Her unique gift is creating jewelry that is an expression of love that blend harmoniously with the person wearing it.

Gabrieli Talit, www.gabrielirubin.co.il The Gabrieli Hand-Weaving Gallery was opened in Old Jaffa in 1964 and the Jerusalem Gabrieli Gallery in February 2005. Gabrieli Talit includes hand-woven talitot, never-stain hand-woven tablecloths and Kuzari ethnic fabric art. Gabrieli Talit also feature the artistic and whimsical sculpture of the well-known Frank Meisler, the hand-painted steel wall sculptures of Mary Goldmintz, the colorful and symbolic silk screens by Victor Shrem and Morris Dahan and unusual and unique jewelry made by creative Israeli artists.

Megiddo, www.dsebjewelry.com DS&EB Jewelry was established in 1989 by two Yong men - David and Eli. Their dream was to make and create their own hand made jewelry influenced by their Middle eastern-Jewish-Israeli cultural heritage and so they opened a beautiful studio (in Rishon Lezion) followed by a gallery at Tel Megiddo. As professionals and well reputed designers DS&EB Jewelry emphasise high quality craft combined with self-expression, cultural heritage, true desire for aesthetic, originality and high technical skills.

Studio Zohar Studio Zohar is a workshop for jewelry design and production and training goldsmiths. Zohar designed jewelry for many leading jewelry factories in Israel and reconstructed antique jewelry for the Jewish museum-12,000 years of culture in Israel. Zohar designs gold and silver jewelry and works with antique Roman and Byzantine glass. Zohar designs and produces Kabbalah jewelry and Judaica as well as teaches in an institution for youth at risk.

Pearly Karpel, www.pearlybeads.com Pearly Karpel was born and raised in Israel and living in Kefar Saba. Although Pearly has a chemical engineering background and worked in the pharmaceutical industry, she as has also been designing glass beads by the Lampwork method for more than 8 years. In the last few years, Pearly has been among the highest professionals in the Lampwork field, such as James Minson and Micheala Muller. She has developed unique techniques and designs, selling her works around the world and mentoring new generations of glass beads designers.

Shula Ross, www.shularossart.co.il In her sculpture and oil paintings, Shula addresses the issue of womanhood but her work is also motivated by her love and views of Israel. She has studied history of art in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her work is exhibited and published in Israel and abroad.

Nurit Design by Nurit Levak, on www.etsy.com Nurit specializes in the design and techniques of jewelry making, working with gold, silver, precious stones and pearls. Her handcrafted and original designs are sold in Israel and selected store in France, Scotland, Australia and the U.S.

Ana Cili, on www.flickr.com Ana moved to Israeli from Albania 19 years ago and found fulfillment by focusing her creativity and energy in making beaded jewelry. Her jewelry reflects her inner self, her imagination and creativity.

Ahuva Elany, www.ahuvaelany.com Ahuva Elany is a graduate of the Bezalel Art Academy's Welding Department (1998) and the Reshet Amal School of Jewelry Manufacturing (2001). Throughout her career as an artist she concentrated on creating gold and silver jewelry but more recently discovered the wonders of copper. Ahuva uses very thin sheets of copper and exposes it's natural shades using special heating and cooling techniques. Her creations are the result of love and coutless hours of thought, time, energy and effort.

Vered Atzmon Vered is an Israeli artist and creates top quality, homemade designed Judaic objects and jewels.

Osnat Zigdon, on www.facebook.com Painting is Osnat's way of expressing her inner world, emotions and feelings. Colors are her passion and most meaningful inspiration. When she paints, she approaches the canvas without knowing what colors or brush to use. They just jump into my hands, like a dance to music Osnat, a curator and artist was born in Israel. She studied Social Sciences at Bar Ilan University, Estimation and Evaluation of Art at Shorashim, and Art Gallery Curator studies at the Technion.

Yair Flax, yuvalsaad1.wix.com Yair and his wife, Ilana are both from Kibbutz Bet Ha-E'mek, in the Western Galilee, 8 miles from Lebanon border. Ilana started making Mosaic five years ago working mainly works with ceramic mosaic. Yair started making stained glass mosaic two years ago. They enjoy working together, enabling each other to move forward with their ideas. Yair and Ilana love making colorful and joyous mosaic, and hope that others will enjoy it as well.

Sharon Inbar, www.in2claypottery.com Sharon finds it intriguing to work with the velvety smooth texture of porcelain and to push this sensitive clay to its limits. She creates unique and modern teapots, bowls, cups and jars.

Hedda Schnur Hedda has been beading seriously for about seven years and is very passionate about beading. A retired UCI Medical School employee with a degree in Biological Sciences, Hedda's beading skills is mostly self-taught. Hedda is a member of the Orange County Bead Society and has been selling her creations for four years.

Since graduating years ago, she has worked in many areas of art and related activities including fiber art, metal working, pottery and jewelry. However, the medium of mosaics is what she had been searching for looks forward to continuing my education in this field. Over the past five years she has added digital painting to her repertoire. People and the intricacies of mood and affect have always fascinated her. In her drawings and paintings she tries to capture the feelings, moods, interactions and gestures. Iriet also paint portraits because she truly loves working with people, taking their moments that they want to eternalize and create a painting for them.

Israel Expo 40th Anniversary

Celebrating Orange County's Jewish History and Israel's 65th

On May 6th, 1973, Orange County held its first ever community-wide celebration of the founding of the state of Israel. Called "the largest event ever planned by the Jewish community," it was created by Ken Levin, Federation's first executive director, in honor of Israel's 25th birthday. Then, as now, admission was free, and it drew thousands of participants to its Cal State Fullerton location. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation Council of Orange County and CSUF Hillel, it was so well received that it became an annual event. The Israel Fair eventually became the Israel EXPO we celebrate today, and this year marks its 40th anniversary.
